Department Fundraiser Brings in $685 for Student Association

Special thanks to Graduate Coordinator Scott Dougan, who participated in the Athens-Savannah 2016 Double Century bike ride, riding a total of 210 miles over 2 days! Snehal Chaudhari is awarded the Mary Erlanger Graduate Fellowship

Congratulations to Snehal Chaudhari, in Dr. Edward Kipreos’s laboratory, for winning the 2015 Mary Erlanger Graduate Fellowship. This fellowship awards exceptional graduate research in areas related to aspects of aging. Snehal has identified a novel pathway to regulate mitochondrial fusion and demonstrated that fusion is required for longevity.


Heather Bishop is awarded an ARCS Foundation Fellowship

Congratulations to Heather Bishop, in Dr. Vasant Muralidharan’s laboratory, for being awarded an ARCS Foundation Fellowship. This is a 3 year monetary award that reflects on her early accomplishment as a scientist. Heather is researching the involvement of ER chaperones in protein trafficking pathways out of the ER in the most deadly human malarial parasite, Plasmodium falciparum.

Justin Fellows Wins AHA Predoctoral Fellowship

Congratulations to Justin Fellows, of the Striepen Lab, for being awarded a highly competitive two-year fellowship from the American Heart Association. Justin studies the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii, which chronically infects about 20% of the U.S. population. He studies the mechanism by which essential proteins are imported into the apicoplast, which is a promising drug target.
