Faculty in the Department of Cellular Biology believe that students learn best from experience. One of the most powerful ways to better understand how cells work, especially in the context of living organisms, and understand how cells play roles in health and disease, is through research. Therefore, Cellular Biology majors are required to participate in research and research related activities as part of their degree requirements. The requirements for our major are detailed below. Majors outside of Cellular Biology may participate in research in our laboratories with faculty permission but should consult their department for major-specific requirements. View Research FAQs Requirements: 2 semesters (or 6 credits) CBIO 4980R, Faculty-Mentored Undergraduate Research III, performed under the mentorship of a CBIO faculty member or in an approved UGA laboratory or external research program (see FAQs regarding research outside of a CBIO lab). This is independent research, which means that you will be doing more than shadowing but performing your own experiments, typically under the direction of a student, post-doc or scientist, in a working research lab. 1 semester (1 credit) of CBIO 4040, Laboratory Group Meeting, preferably taken together with the second semester of CBIO 4980R. The purpose of this class is for students to communicate their specific research question. They should be able to clearly demonstrate their ability to place their work in the greater scientific context, understand their experimental rationales and procedures, and present their results and conclusions orally to their laboratory group.
